Actually it does. When the engine is running the input shaft turns, and
this in turn spins the cluster gear which sits in the oil in the bottom of
the case. This gets flung around just as it would if you were driving
around (unless you are holding the clutch out). So the tranny does get
lubricated - the rear end however doesn't unless the drive shaft is moving
