Good question "What can we do about it?" Well, you
are doing it... The internet, lists like this one and
the various web sites are taking up the slack.
`Last time I checked, R&T isn't a charity.
Someone, or a bunch of someones will want their "cut"
of the "action". R&T has always been a conduit for
the manufacturers... It has to be. R&T probably can't
exist without them. Of course we gripe about
advertising. but I gotta be honest with you. I'd
rather have car adverts than cigarette adverts (you
smokers can get as testy as you want... I don't give
a rat's butt). Our old cars are becoming less and
less of a factor in what R&T does (unless you count
articles of curiosity)...
Hey, the audience is getting older. too. I'm not sure
the public still want's the "in depth" stuff Road &
Track publishes. Is this a bad thing? For us "old
codgers", probably. I know the time I used to have to
absorb a month's issue just isn't there. It's got to
be hell trying to figure out what the subscribers
want... They'll surely tell you when you miss the
mark.
Those people who made our cars and those who history
with our cars are getting fewer... In the future, I
don't think anyone will pay to read second or third
hand rehashings of what "Jim Clark had for breakfast
on the morning he died".
The Brits have a word for what we do regarding our
LBCs... We're car "train spotters". We car "geeks"
are the ones keeping the flame burning. Thanks to
technology, we can still stay in touch.
By all means if you don't like where R&T is heading
let them know... They do listen to the readers...
Just be nice... They're "car geeks" too
