First thing I'd is ohm out the switch circuit from up at the relay and
observe the behavior of the circuit as you switch gears. Check the operation
of the relay too.  This will tell you if the problem is 1) electrical; 2)at
the gearbox or not; and, 3) avoid a possibly unnecessary interior removal.
