I had a 71 from new until 1979 when it was wrecked. It had a run on
problem from time to time. Advice from the dealer was to use the clutch
to help stop the engine however they also made sure the timng was spot on
and that the edle speed was as low as possible. With that in mind, make
sure you give the engine enough time to idle down, and use the highest
octane gas around (ISTR that as dealer advice too.) Oh, yes, my '71
tended to eat exhaust manifold gaskets too until it was fitted with some
heavey duty material and aircraft grade adhesive (according to the
servicde manager) although I suspec the real problelm was mechanic
ineptitude.
