Robert,
That coil is probably the resistor which lowers the current in the field 
windings of the
generator.  This ought to be VERY replaceable from a similar unit.  You simply 
have to
make very reliable solder connections.

I would have expected the ammeter to show some charge sometimes, even if 
briefly....
What killed the resistor?

does anyone know if the wire wound coil on the underside of the voltage
regulator can be replaced or must i go for a new regulator, this is the
"later' type with the plug on terminals for the tr3. the coil checks as an
open and of course i get no charge on the ammeter .  thanks Rob Burnett
