I believe part of your low number may be the result of measuring
horsepower "at the wheel".
The HP figures for motors are generally (almost always) given in BHP,
or Brake HorsePower -- which, if I am not mistaken, is a measurement
with the device attached directly to the motor.
If you think about it, you lose some power going through the gearbox,
through the drivehsaft, through the diff, etc. You've got bearings
to spin, gearbox oil to splash around, u-joints to flex, tires to
flex, etc. How much power, I couldn't really say.
What might be a better comparison to make (rather than wheel hp to
brake hp) is to find some other '72 TR6 owner and put their car on
the same tester you used.
I am not an expert in this area, but I believe this line of inquiry
might be a good one to start with.
