Hi Cosmo,

Your questions:

TR4A CAM: My car has a late TR4A drivetrain from a donor TR4A
back at least 20+ years ago before I bought the car. All the
parts for my engine and clutch rebuild had to be TR4A stuff. The
stock cams are different. The TR4A cam along with the later
intake manifold, valves and head... were rated at slightly more
HP and torque.

FAN BALANCING: The device I used was actually from my 1/4 and
1/3 scale RC airplane hobby from the 90s. It has a low friction
stand with intersecting discs on each side and a cross rod that
has an adapter for grasping and centering the center hole of a
propeller (or TR fan). I was told by a local guy here that the
bicycle shop uses a bigger version for fixing bicycle wheels. You
turn lightly and watch the heavy blade drop. You can then file
of some metal on the heavy blades... OR... add weight to the
light end. I used the original TR scheme of center mounted
weight plates and got it to balance. But the TR fans are WAY TO
HEAVY and crude. The TR250 yellow plastic fan is the right
solution.
My real goal would be to find a way to mate a modern light weight
liquid clutch fan to the TR pulley.

Jeff,

I rebuilt my TR4 engine to original spec except for 87MM pistons
and liners, Teflon valve guides, hardened seats and modern rear
seal. I used the stock TR4A cam fro BPNW. The engine came out
great.... strong and smooth.

Then are you stating that the TR4 cam is different then the
TR4/A cam?

I bought one of those "tropical" 6-blade fans on Ebay and
balanced it with bicycle wheel type balancer with new balance
weights from TRF.

I've been in the bicycle business for several years & I'm having
a
difficult time picturing what you mean by:

balanced it with bicycle wheel type balancer with new balance
weights

Now I'm Not saying that you didn't do it. I'm just picturing a
bike
"truing stand" [used to true up bicycle wheels] {is this the same
meaning that you use as: 'balancing'?}, & how did you mount the
fan?
then I gathered that you spun the fan to the point of it
stopping, thus
thinking that the 'heavy' point is at the bottom blade. so you
then
probley attached the wt to the top of the fan blade to
'counter-act' the
'heavy' point the spun the fan again to check the spin. Where
there
different weights or were they all equall in weight? If there
were
different weights, then how did you know what weight to put on to
'counter-act' the off balance weight? -Cosmo Kramer
