FWIW Many US public schools are going to a "year round" schedule, like
the one my daughter is in. She missed school to go to Portland, will
probably miss again to go to Breckenridge.
With the year round schedule, there is no way to plan an activity (like
VTR) so someone doesn't have to decide whether to miss the activity or
miss school.
