Could be three things, put in order of $ to fix.... 1. A bad u-joint.
2 A worn spline on wire wheels. or   3. a problem in the differential
mounting. On my TR I've had 1 & 3.

First off you need to get the rear end of the car up where you can
safely crawl underneath. Check the u-joints by grabbing each side and
twisting. Check the splines in the same manner, only this time hold
the axle and twist the wheel. For 1 & 2, a small amount of play can
cause the "clunk".

Next look at the differential mounts. Check for wear or looseness in
the bushings. Sometimes a small floor jack supporting the differential
can help here. If all looks OK, check the mounts. Sometimes you can
see the crack, othertimes you can see it move when you shimmy the
differential a little.

While 1 & 2 can be fixed by replacing parts, #3 is a major pain. Hope
you know a good welder!
