I want to thank all of you who took the time to write all sorts of
suggestions, posting most to the list for all to see. Based on the several
"I always have trouble with those too" comments, I'm gonna pass for now.

I did try drilling a pilot hole; on the other half of the broken stud.
Center-punched it, clamped it in a vice, then used the same drill I was
planning to use on the stud that's in the head that's on the engine that's
in the car - and promptly drilled a hole about halfway between the center
and the threads! If I did that with it in a vice, drilling straight down,
imagine what I'd do if I tried it in the car - drilling horizontally! No
thanks.

I'm going to wait until the head has to come off for something more serious
than a broken exhaust manifold stud and take it to a pro - which was, after
all, one of the suggested methods of removing broken studs.

Again, my thanks to all of you who offered opinions and suggestions.
