A quick reality check : how much power does that "5 hp" compressor
supposedly draw ?  If it was really 5 hp, it would need about 25 amps at
220v !

There's also no physical way to run a 2.5 hp motor at full load on a
normal 110v outlet ... it would need about 25 amps and the largest UL
approved 110v outlet is only 20 amps.  The common household outlet is
only 15 amps.

Compressor hp ratings remind me a lot of audio amplifier ratings in the
70s, they bear no resemblance to reality !
