Geoff - I am forwarding your note to the Triumph Mailing List (Subscription
info @ http://www.vtr.org/mailing-list.html ) for contact information and
you may get some additional responses about the backfiring from them.

How long have you let it idle? Has it gotten up to normal working
temperature? If not, let it idle longer and see if the backfiring
diminishes.

Otherwise, it could be any of several things (or combinations)

Check spark plugs for correct ones (Champion L-87Y or equals) with correct
gap.
Check Timing and Advance/Retard on Distributor
You mention cleaning the carbs; Check fuel mixture (it can be either too
rich or too lean and cause backfiring)
Make sure you are using fresh fuel - the older the fuel the more it acts
like a weak mixture
And at that point you are beyond my capabilities. It could be the valves
(not seating properly) or their timing.
It could also be a cracked head gasket which I believe lets air into the
system.

Good luck
Carl

Carl,

I have a TR-3B and need advice. The car starts and idles OK. When "revved"
it belches and backfires. I have cleaned the carbs but can not get it
tuned. What else should I check?

Any suggestions?

Also, do you know a good TR mechanic in the Greenville SC area?

Thanks,

Geoff Knudson
Salem, SC
