This reminds me of one day at Thames Board Mills, back in 1967, where I was
a "trainee engineer", which involved attending University for six months in
the year and then working with the apprentices for six months every year (a
great way to get an engineering degree, I might add...). One of the fitters
(machinists, in USA) was attempting to explain the concept of the micrometer
to one of the apprentices. He could see that the apprentice was having
difficulty with the concept of "thous." He asked the apprentice how many
thous he thought might be in an inch, to which the apprentice replied: " I
dunno, there must be millions of 'em."
