The seat I had in my '58 was a plywood base (1/2 inch I believe). I did
seal it and finish it with a marine grade varnish before installing the
padding and vinyl.
The braces on mine were not particularly flimsy. They were made of 1/8" or
3/16" steel and were quite sturdy. These may have been of the aftermarket
or replacement variety, but I can't imagine the original being anything
less. I had made some out of 3/16" aluminum which would have supported the
seat, but may not have been as sturdy.

I recently sold the car, so I cannot get images of the installation.

Subject: Re: TR3 rear seat
Gents,
Sorry to pop into what may be an ongoing conversation, but I'm a fairly new
owner of a '58 TR3A with what appears to be a factory installed rear seat.
(The unbelievably flimsy brackets suggest it is in fact original).
Instructions for installation appear in the TR3 appendix to the original TR2
shop manual I have, and I'll try to keep posted on this and chime in. We're
in the process of redoing the interior, so I'm glad you're going first on
this one. The plan was to rebuild the seat from plywood and re-cover it.
Sound reasonable?
Regards,
