If you pull the tranny first, you will definitely have to support the
back of the block. The front mounts will fail rather than support the
engine.
I'll second Wayne's suggestion to remove the engine and tranny as a
unit. If you don't like working on it while suspended from the hoist,
you can set the engine on the floor while you remove the tranny.
The tranny comes off the block real easy. Just remove all the bolts and
slide it off. It has to go straight back for a few inches, then you can
lift it away. If it has an OD, and you are pulling it with the engine
still in the car, ISTR you will need to remove the rear crossmember to
get room. This isn't a problem without an OD. With the body on, I
definitely suggest a helper, but it should be easier with the body off.
Don't forget to remove the cover ... <g>
