These trailers should have overrun type brakes fitted, as you brake the
weight of the trailer pushes forward on the hitch which is a sliding unit
and actuates a push rod (or possibly hyraulic) brake system these systems
are totally self sufficient needing no connection to the tow vehicle brakes.
There will also  be a breakaway chain or wire the function of which is to
yank the handbrake (emergency brake) on and then snap, bringing the trailer
to a halt without whipping the tow vehicle around like a rag doll! Make sure
it is fixed to a remote part of the hitch and not looped over the ball as it
will not do its job if it falls off with the trailer!!!!

A very good idea as the trailer with car will feel very different from the
trailer on its own!
