I wonder how this logic could be applied to buying a canadian Mini Cooper?
If it was a year prior to when it was 'bannished by Nader' perhaps it would
have the door plate. However, since Mini is still in business, I guess the
letter would say otherwise. We can always dream...

You can simply drive it into the U.S. if you meet all the requirements. If
the car is 25 years or older I would not have to have the safety conformity
manufacturs papers. Yes to all of your other questions with the exception
of
insurance. Basically here is what happened. I live in Cleveland Oh and
wanted to make sure I had all my paperwork in order before making the long
drive to Niagra Falls. I called US Customs and Canadien Customs. There
were
no issues with Canadien Customs other than making sure title was transferred
into my name.
U.S. Customs required:
1. Transferred title.
2. An original plate on the drivers door that so states This vehicle
conforms to..and also a letter from manufacturer.
3. Customs Duty. It was like 10%(dont recall specifically but it was pretty
expensive.
4. License tags
5. Plus, there is a form or two you must have obtained prior to going to
canada that Customs requires. Call your local License/Title bureau before
going.
AND IT DIDNT STOP THERE:
6. When you get the car into your state. You must tranfer the canadian
title
into your state title, which requires a state trooper inspection.(at least
thats required in Ohio.) A really nice feature of Canadien titles is that
they show all prior owners of the vehicle right on the title so tracing the
numbers on the car, engine, and transmission was pretty easy. Hope this
