Hi David
There should be a fibre or rubber washer in the very top of the cap for use
on our cars, this makes a seal to atmosphere so that the vacuum caused by
the contraction of the water as it cools, pulls the water from the expansion
bottle back into the rad. There will however be some short fall with this
system due to loss of vacuum, weight of water etc, unless your system is A1
perfect.
