Hi Philip
The function of the oil in the dashpots is to slow the lifting of the piston
which creates a smaller venturi and a higher air velocity creating lower
pressure above the fuel causing more fuel to be "sucked" into the air hence
a richer mixture for acceleration. On this basis the thicker the oil the
longer you retain the rich mixture the better the acceleration. Therefore
the "quicker response" is not relating to the acceleration merely to the
speed with which the piston rises conversely the "slower response" of the
piston will give better acceleration. Try putting some 90 grade oil in there
as I did, Say good by to your economy first! (only if you use that loud
pedal in the manner for which it was intended).
Yes it would be a good idea to empty your carbs and start from scratch! I
assume the car is running SU's at this point, if US spec was Strombergs add
one more screw, to do this simply undo the
three screws that hold the vacuum chamber to the venturi body and lift
carefully away, taking care not to bend the metering needle then simply
invert each one until all the oil falls out, carefully replace each one on
its respective body replace the three screws lightly tighten. With the air
filters removed insert your finger in the hole and lift the piston(before
adding the oil) let it fall, it should land with a "soft metallic click" to
quote the manual, if it doesn't there is a problem (investigate). Assuming
it does add your oil and enjoy!!!

Graham.
