First, thanks to all who responded. As expected, the experiences, and
therefore the responses, were varied. Some recommended coating with either
the Moss stuff, something from POR-15, something from JC Whitney, or
something from the local auto parts store. Most that had coated their tanks
were satisfied with the results. I had two responders with bad coating
experiences. Several responders questioned the need for any coating at all.
This leads me to a new question: If the tank is really rust free, wouldn't
just keeping water-free gasoline in the tank prevent it from rusting from
the inside? The tank looks pretty good from the inside now. I used a
mirror on a stick on a sunny day to check out the inside of the tank. Only
rust on the tank is surface rust on the outside bottom, where I suspect the
padding collected water and started the rusting process. I had the tank
pressure tested by a local welding shop, with good results. I think I will
try the no coating approach.
Again, thanks, Dennis
