I don't know why an ill-fitting intake would overheat, but looking at a few pix on the web of peoples' GT6's with their bonnets up, I'd say it's very common for the shrouds to be missing. As delivered, these cars had a splash shield on each side of the engine, and an elaborate enclosure surrounding the rad to duct the air coming in through the grille.
