Ahh.. this is a REALLY good idea... Is there any chance of damage to the nose
of the first motion shaft by the chuck? I guess if you do the chuck up tight
enough it won't spin on the shaft, and it isn't going to damage the surface
through tightening. Does a bearing run on the nose of the first motion shaft?
(haven't looked closely at what the gearbox attaches to.
Will have to quickly scrounge together a gauge

I don't have the equipment for brazing, but I can solder, Anyone think
soldering is going to be strong enough?
Anyone have any sources for the plug mentioned in the above article? What is
the thread? A bolt of the right thread will do the job, unless it is a trick
pipe thread, in which case a hydrolics shop should have it.
I have no documentation at all about this overdrive. Where do I attach the
gauge? There is a plug that looks similar to the one shown in the above
article near the solinoid. Is this it?
Could anyone scan the relevant pages from a manual about diagnosing problems
with a J type overdrive.
To repeat the symptoms. With engine off, car not moving, engaging overdrive by
connecting solinoid to battery yealds sparks and a small click. With the car
driving at 60km/h in third gear, doing the same trick with the solinoid onto a
battery yealds sparks and you can't hear the click over all the other noises.
No effect on gearing is felt or heard.
