Almost always, the first time I press the starter button, hot or cold, the
starter spins up, but does not engage the ring gear. When I try again, I
get full engagement and the engine turns over fine. There is never a
gnashing of the starter gear, it just spins away. The engine, flywheel and
ring gear have all been changed (with the new engine this spring), so it
must be the starter, but what? >>

Hi Jack

The bendix whatchamacallit must be hanging up somehow and not getting drawn
back to engage the flywheel. If you have an old starter, you could try
swapping out these things, and see if that does anything. Also are you sure
the starter is spinning when this happens?
FWIW my 3B & 4 seem to chew up starters with alarming regularity. Though I've
never seen this symptom.
