Hi Jack
The bendix whatchamacallit must be hanging up somehow and not getting drawn
back to engage the flywheel. If you have an old starter, you could try
swapping out these things, and see if that does anything. Also are you sure
the starter is spinning when this happens?
FWIW my 3B & 4 seem to chew up starters with alarming regularity. Though I've
never seen this symptom.
