I go top up and zipper down (you know what I mean ;-0 )
with the following conditions:

1.  When I've/we've over done the sun way too much and
    are starting to look like lobsters in the pot.
2.  When it's not a heavy rain but a drizzle.
3.  When it's getting a bit too cool for top down but want
    more air than just the windows.

You'd be surprised how much air you get with the windows down
and the rear window unzipped. I rather enjoy it when can't have
the top down.
