Sounds like a bad ground. There is a black wire behind the dash. This wire
runs from ground IN SERIES to all the gauges. Check it for continuity and to
see whether it is connected to all the gauges.
The rheostat should be in the center switch cluster (it should be the
left-most switch from the ignition key). If the rheostat is bad come back to
me and I'll tell you how to fix it.

Could be: 1) high resistance ground between sending unit and gauge 2) bad
sending unit 3) bad voltage stabilizer or 4) bad gauge. Suggest that you
first check the wiring and connections. Check the wiring voltage to ground
throughout the circuit. See the wiring diagram (p.209 Haynes) and fig. 10.21
for details. You are looking for opens or high resistance in the wires and
connectors. This would cut down on current flow to the gauge. If OK then
move on to sending unit (see Joe's Curry's comments on that, the stabilizer,
and the gauge itself.

I might have a new TRF one in its shipping bag. Let me know if no-one else
has one. I was keeping it as a spare. I ordered it but before I put it in
the trouble with my speedo cleared up.

Right. Hope this helps. Cheers.
