Rob,
You should be able to detect a bent shaft by removing the cap and
spinning the engine.  However, the cap might be distorted causing your
problem.

I had an obvious wobble in a Spitfire distributor a couple of years ago
and it turned out not to be the distributor, but the piece that it fits
into (VB calls it the Distributor Housing) that was the culprit.
