I'm Ken Shapiro, 46 year old kindergarten teacher, marrried
to Beth (also a teacher...summer is good!), witha three year old
daughter (gorgeous,sweet,perfect...) named Sydney.
I've always been into cars. Jim Clark was my god when my friends
were into Jim Palmer and Brooks Robinson (Hey...it's Baltimore).
In the late eighties I collected HO Aurora slot cars and
published a national newsletter called "HO USA" that continues
today, though I've given it over to my then assistant, Rick
Burneson.
I've raced locally a little (Summit Point WV), but gave it up
after rolling a Honda CRX (showroom stock) over ...three times
on its side and once END-FOR-END! A guy showed me the videotape,
and I decided that since this was a "hobby" I'd change hobbies
before I would up like Christopher Reeves.
I've owned at least twenty VWs of every dictinction, a datsun
510, Lotus Europa (my first frame off resto...museum quality),
Porsche 914, Mazda Miata, 1964 Corvette Stingray and my current
"steed" a 1994 Suzuki Samurai! I bought my newest toy, a 1970
Triumph GT6+ a month ago.
I decided to do this car since my most recent resto., a 1796
house (whee we live) is just about done (never done). It's
the "Hiss House", the ancestoral home of accused spy Alger
Hiss. We have documented slave quarters (MD historical society),
seven working fireplaces, a coffin door (they held services here
when it was a methodist meeting house), logs for joists, etc.
I read only non-fiction...buddhism and triumphs as of late, and
play only blues on my 1959 Stratocaster. I've even recored an
album for my kids at school called "Kindergarten Blues" (available
for $6.99)
Oh yeah, I sued my employer (Baltimore County School System)
in Federal Court when they denied me a child rearing leave due
to gender (six paid weeks of sick leave are allowed to female
teachers). I won! Sydney and I were all over the local news
and even got some national attention.
Hope there's more to tell, but I've got to get back to creating
some more bio...maybe another 50 years worth!
