Tom, I have owned my 59 TR3 for 12 years (this Saturday) and have had a cloth top the entire time. It had one small tear in it when I purchased the car, and that tear never got worse, never caused a problem. I have had some problems with fading, and was actually getting ready to post a question asking about dye products that won't harm the cloth or its water resistence.
