Tom :
I haven't tried the one currently sold by Whitney, but I like the tools
included in the "SU Tool Kit", which I bought from Whitney many years
ago. (Moss sells what appears to be the same thing, as PN 386-300,
$18.95, page A34 in the printed TRI-09 catalog. I'm sure the other
vendors carry it too.)
This is basically just a set of pointers that allow you to compare the
position of the pistons in real time. This lets you check the
synchronization under actual operating conditions, so you can compensate
for the flex in the coupling between carbs. (Perhaps this doesn't apply
to a Spit, but TR2-4 turn the throttle shafts from the very front, and
there is a measureable 'twist' in the flex couplings.)
Another advantage is that you don't have to remember a reading from one
carb to the other (like with the Whitney tool), and since the comparison
is done in real time, you don't have to worry about a rough running
engine (or one that 'hunts' at idle) changing the reading as you move
between carbs.
The tools also make it easy to check needle centering, and for binding
in the pistons.
Just my $.02, YMMV
