The Bentley shop manual has an entire chapter on routine maintainence. If you
don't have this book you can get it from
the publisher Robert Bentley (www.rb.com) for about $60. It tells you when,
where, and how to perform most any
maintainence and repair job on your TR-6.
In addition to a set of screwdrivers, combination wrenches, and sockets you
will need a few special tools which can
be purchased at any Sears or auto parts store. Don't buy cheap tools- they're
harder to use, they often cause damage
to either you or the car (or both!) , and you have to buy them more than once
as they break or wear out. Sears
Craftsman tools aren't as nice as Snap-On or some of the other professional
brands but they affordable quality
tools and if you have a problem with one you can usually swap it for a new one
with no questions asked.
The ignition system has six spark plugs. Replace them.
The distributor has breaker points, cap, rotor, and condenser. Replace them.
Use a spark plug gapping tool (<$5) to check and adjust the spark plug gap.
Remove the distributor cap and use a feeler gauge (<$5) to adjust the point gap.
Use a timing light (<$50) to set the ignition timing.
Remove the valve cover and use the feeler gauge to set the valve clearances.
Change the engine oil and filter often.
Cheers,
-Erik
