I honestly thought that this was one of the real pleasures of
tour-by-smallish-car: being able to restrict your luggage to exactly what
you need.
Last year our family of five went camping[1] throughout UK and
continental Europe in the 2.5PI with a strict requirement of no luggage
racks etc. The luggage included two tents, five sleeping bags, a tiny
stove, summer clothes (which for the northern UK part of the tour
basically involved rain gear) and whatever. Luckily, we did not leave out the
spare (we had a flat tyre in Belgium).

[1] For our American listeners, I should hasten to explain that camping
is a pastime enjoyed by some inhabitants of the old world, where the act
of sleeping does not involve Holiday Inn[2], but instead lying on the grass
with a thin piece of suspended cloth separating you from the world outside
(aka. tent), and eating does not involve Danny's Diner, but instead
preparing the food ourselves on a tiny portable stove - again basically
sitting on the ground.
[2] There are two camps here, so to speak. Some, like us, does resort to
inns when the rain gets too bad.
