Clearly not essential, especially since the later cars didn't come with
one. In theory, it prolongs the life of the TOB by pulling the fork
back a bit when the clutch is released. On my car, I find not having
the spring makes the pedal 'feel' unreliable. Without it, when I first
start up, or after driving a long time without using the clutch, the
engagement is nearer the bottom of the pedal travel than when I've just
used the clutch.

Same here, except for the ones with automatic transmissions. Then I
find myself groping for the gear shift at stop lights <g>
