Tony,

It is my impression that shock oil, like brake oil is of a different
configuration than motor and gear oil and can be harmful to the seals in a
shock.  You may want to stop by a Harley Davidson dealer or shop and pick up
50wt fork oil.  (HD's are the only ones still using the heavy oils) It's
definitely compatible.  I'd also recommend filling the system, running for a
week and doing a drain and refill to make sure all of the gear oil is out of
the shock.

This is second hand info, and I am not a lubrication specialist, but makes a
lot of sense to me.  Can anyone confirm or dispute my thoughts here?
