Listers,
I have a interesting symptom that I think I know the answer
to.... but the behavior is just a little weird.
At about 180 miles into the post rebuild period....My oil
pressure gauge started showing some strange movements. When
I first started the car the guage would report smooth
readings up past 70 PSI.. all the way to 100 pSI if I tried
real hard to get high revs when cold.
I knew I had to adjust the presssure relief valve... thanked
God for all the wonderful oil pressure. The oil presurre
behaved as expected and lowered to about 80 at highway and
50+ at hot idle.
Recently I noticed that as the car warmed up the needle
would jump around like crazy. As I incressed the revs the
pressure would go up smoothly and then when the revs
continued upward the needle would start jumping between 50
and the 75-80 high reading and with more revs snap to
attention at 50 PSI. If the revs are lowered the reverse
sequence is observed. Starts snapping back and forth
betwwen 50 and the high mark and the into normal analog
smooth transtion from high to idle.
I assume it is in the pressure relif valve... but it seems
like the thing was not working at all when the engine first
came to life and now it is cutting in and out at the 50 PSI
level. Last year the pressure never got higher than about
55.
I have the teclemaite version as it is a later 4A engine. I
would have replaced the spring but I can't locate anyone
that carries the teclemite spring. The purolator version is
listed by Moss I beleive.
Any comments appriciated and a source for the teclemite
spring and ball.
