My vote is to follow the break-in strategy that has worked so well for you.
I haven't had too many new american cars and only two new LBCs in my auto
career. Despite the relaxed break-in requirements for newer american cars
(better tolerances & lighter - better oils I suppose), I've always followed
the more cautious break-in plan as you have.....my daughter's Pontiac has
over 130,000 miles - no engine work - 1/2 qt "used" every 3,000 miles.....the
"old" Chevy had 136,000 miles when I sold it....my (purchased new) 1970 MGB
had 106,000 miles when I sold it (no engine problems)....
