I recall seeing some assertions that the correct position is to have the latch at nine o'clock. But I see 2 early magazine article reprints that appear to put it at six o'clock. (a) Mechanix Illustrated, 1954 (definitely at six o'clock) (b) The Autocar, 8 January 1954 (hard to tell, but looks like six o'clock) Both of these tests feature early cars with the square taillights.
