Joe,

I think it was visionary on their part - they knew that in the '90s these cars
would be classics, and would sit on the show field with the trunks open. They
didn't want to run our batteries down!

Or, they wanted to save the cost of about 4 - 5 feet of wire. By tying the
lamp to the red wire in the trunk, which had to be there anyway, they saved
about 4 - 5 feet of purple wire from the dash.

My schematics show the wiring change occured with the '74 models. That's not
the same as saying it actually occured in '74, only that the diagrams show it
that way.
