I had the same trouble when I rebuilt my TR4 engine. I spoke to Moss (UK)
about it and the first thing that they asked was 'do I have positive pressure
in the crankcase ?' of course I did - and this did not help. They
immediately suggested that I ditch the old aluminim seal and use 'one that the
racing TRs use' which is effectively a Land Rover rear oil seal (at least
I think it is !) - a continuous rubber seal with a spring in it - BUT you have
to take the crank out and have it machined to size. It's much easier to
fit than the original, and doesn't leak at all. I think that nowadays in
the UK most of the larger dealers sell this item, it cost me £45 plus
machining on the crank at the time (1991)
