Joe,
By all means paint the engine black--it's what almost all of the engines
were painted and it's easier to keep it looking nice. The Piggott book
mentions instances of TR2-3 engines originally being red, but doesn't say
it happened on the later models. I'm finding some orange/red on my TR3
engine, but it seems to be a primer rather than the final coat.
