Mark,

As an enthusiastic TR6 owner, and an avid reader of the list, I am aware
how valuable a database of postings can be, so I am really apreciative of
the effort made to put together a search engine with this kind of utility.
I am also aware that an open database can be abused by those wishing to
trawl email addresses.

The issue, in my mind, is not whether the database exists but how do we
ensure appropriate control of access to the list. I belong to several
educational research lists with searchable databases, and several cases
these are controlled by use of email address and password (and in one case,
they even have cookie-enabled access after the first login) - in the
motoring domain, iATN also have excellent control of their lists and
databases. So such search engines do exist. Incidentally, I do belong to
several lists with open search engines and I have not seen a great increase
in junkmail from those sources, but that may be because educational
research is so boring that the spammers fall asleep looking for the
addresses amongst all the other verbage ;-)

It would be a great shame if such a powerful utility such as this (already
available for other marques/models) is allowed to fall into
disrepair/disrepute because we spend time in some kind of hissing match,
when we can fix the problem relatively easily and all enjoy the benefit of
a very best help tool of last resort ... the accumulated expertise of
others on the list! It would also seem to cut down the repeated
same-question problem (yea, I'm probably guilty on that front - but I
always do check the FAQs first).

Also, many thanks for your efforts and enthusiasm in coordinating and
facilitating the list - a thankless and often unrecognized contribution to
keeping my LBC wheels rolling.
