As another lister pointed out, the capping strip/door pull is a separate
part from the door trim and can be removed (it is only glued on and most of
them fall off anyway).
My car (69 TR6) came without these caps and I didn't bother replacing them.
To achieve door closure, I fitted a pair of TR4 door pulls. The holes still
exist in the TR6 metalwork (two square ones near the top edge) and the
handles don't look out of place.
