If you have the original push button solenoid you can try turning on the key
and pushing the button. If your starter goes then your solenoid is probably
bad. The clicking seems to indicate a bad solenoid. 
If you're very hairy chested you can try jumping across the solenoid terminals
with a not indispensible screwdriver. One with a handle. Again if the starter
goes it's your solenoid.
If not look at the cables. If there is a lot of resistance somewhere it will
get hot - fast.
