Well, when you get a new tool, sometimes they are coated with machine oil
(just thin oil). I usually hose down stuff with WD-40 before storage,
because it's already in a spray can and hence easy to get everywhere.
If you have lots of time and inclination, just buy some cheap grease from
the auto parts store and smear it all over whatever you worry about
rusting. It will be pretty awful come time to remove it (covered in dirt
and dust) but provided the grease doesn't dry out, you won't have any rust
problems.
