Wayne,
The first thing to check is the oil gauge. As you suggested the
gauge might be faulty (the needle might be sticking at 25) and
the oil pressure is actually higher than the reading. My oil
pressure gauge does not drop below 20 PSI even with the engine
off. If I tap on the gauge it will budge towards zero but it
doesn't quite get there. Of course there is a backup - the oil
pressure failure light.
The second thing to check is the oil pressure relief valve.
The spring might have broken (I've never heard of such a thing
but who knows?) resulting in lower spring tension allowing the
valve to open at 25 PSI.
If the above steps yeild no solution then get Len Renkenberger's
6-Tech. This is a collection of his own technique's developed
over a 1,000,000 plus miles of TR6 usage. He has a chapter on
changing the bearings (which I did last winter and it went quite
well). I suggest you get this manual (if it is still in print)
and read this chapter. Also, when you are under there I highly
recommend you install a new oil pump.
Good Luck
Dave Massey
