Yes, disconnecting the shock will help. Are you certain it's corrosion or is
it possible that it's just all jammed up?
I've always had to use quite a bit of force to get these little devils apart.
These brackets, if on the car for a long time, are almost always bent anyway,
making reassembly sometimes virtually impossible. New ones are, or were at
least, available. I'd plan on replacing them. You'll save hours of
frustration, skinned knuckles and (if you are like me) lots of bad language !
