Oh, patient Scions,
I have received a few replies already regarding the problem with my 73
TRClunk. The messages have been informative, and I thank you, but maybe I
should have included all that I have done to date:
Frame diff mounts professionally welded and beefed up per TRF, Poly mounts
installed, Nylatron trailing arm bushings, Apple HD shocks, new links, new
u-joints (all 6), hubs spec out at .002" end float, and the replacement diff
has a pinion to crownwheel backlash that is right on per Mr. Bentley.
Even after all of this, the damn thing still had a noticeable clunk coming
from the right rear. I don't know if it was frustration or curiosity that
made me do this, but I put the car on jack stands, removed the rear wheels,
pulled the parking brake as hard as I could, and had a friend let the clutch
out in 1st and reverse repeatedly until I could isolate the noise.
The only movement I could see was the axle shaft. It wasn't the normal
rotational movement either, as the splined area moved up and down about 1/8
inch. I then released the parking brake and let out the clutch in 3rd, and
then 4th. That's when I noticed that the shaft was flopping around at the
splines(again about 1/8 inch, in all directions). Someone correct me if I'm
wrong, but I don't think this is right. Am I crazy, or am I just not
looking in all the right places???
My thinking now is that I may have embarked upon the restoration of the
hardest driven, most mechanically neglected TR6 known to man. Damn, I love
these cars.
