Spit bonnet cracks

This is probably a question for the Spit list but I don't know how to
send to it...
Has anyone come up with a solution to the cracks that develop from the
corners of the bonnet latch hole?  A non-online buddy will be painting
his car soon and mine is about a year away.  We have thought about
welding up the existing cracks and fabricating a doubler plate for the
back side to weld in place.
Are we on the right track?
