I have had two alignments done on my 73 TR6 - the first a 4-wheel, and
the second just the front, both by the same shop. The owner had to use
quite a few shims in the front to get the correct camber, and had to
adjust the castor to stop the car pulling to the left. I had the front
end and frame checked last year, and everything seemed to be OK.
The car now does not hold a straight line. I have to constantly correct
the steering. It seems to wander at any time, feels light, and
certainly doesn't make me feel secure.
All the front suspension has been rebuilt and is tight, as is the
steering.
The shop owner (who is very experienced, but not with Triumphs) feels
that it may be the Spax shocks in the front that are not allowing enough
'give' for the car to ride and steer properly. If I press down on the
front end of the car, this is almost no movement between the car and the
tires, but the tires give a lot (Pirelli radials, new). Pressing down
on the rear of the car gives more movement of the car (still not too
much), and some give in the tires. He advised me to put on the old blue
Armstrong? shocks in the front (which seem in decent condition) and see
what the difference is.
The front has new std. springs, Spax non-adjustable shocks, and
poly/nylon bushings in the suspension and steering rack.
The rear has good original springs and lever shocks, with poly/nylon
bushings all around. The car sits and rides level.
The wheels are KN and the tires are 196-65-15.
There seems to be proper camber (from my perspective), as the front and
rear wheels are fairly vertical i.e no noticeable positive or negative
camber.
Any advice from anyone?
