Dennis,
My guess is you have an intermittant open to the coil somewhere.
Check the connections
from coil to distributor, and from the ignition to the coil. ( The
other option would be a short
somewhere in the same circuit, but your simptoms don't really sound
right for that.) I
have seen a simular problem on a different type vehicle that turned out
to be bad contacts in
the run circuit of the ignition switch, so that's another posibility.
