To all concerned,

I, long ago, questioned the value of said paper gaskets. I found two things:

1. The surfaces are definately NOT flat - especially after pounding or
prying them apart (no comments please - you all know exactly what I mean).

To rectify this, a quick chase with a large bastard (file, that is) will
smooth things out nicely.

2. Permatex "super blue" works wonders as a sealant and/or gasket replacement.

It is of a thinner consistency than standard silicones and can be spread
very thin. It dries quick and resiliant. I have used it almost everywhere
on the car with few if any leaks.

Give it a shot.
